Case Study — Financial Scorecards Dashboard

Transforming Financial Reporting

Client Challenge

Company leadership relied on slow, manual financial reporting processes that made it difficult to gain a timely and consistent view of business performance. Financial data was spread across spreadsheets and static reports, requiring significant effort from the finance team to prepare monthly and quarterly packs. This often resulted in delays, version inconsistencies, and limited confidence in the numbers being presented.

Executives needed a clear, high-level view of overall financial health — including revenue, margins, operating income, and cost structure — that could be quickly understood and used for decision-making without navigating complex reports. At the same time, the finance team required the ability to analyse detailed P&L line items across multiple time horizons, including monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and year-to-date views, while maintaining consistency in calculations. Existing reporting tools lacked the flexibility, interactivity, and speed needed to support both executive oversight and detailed financial analysis.

Solution

Discovery and requirements gathering:
We worked closely with finance stakeholders to understand how financial information was being used across the organisation. This included identifying the KPIs required for executive reporting, the level of detail needed by the finance team, and the financial periods most commonly used for analysis. Existing reporting challenges, such as reconciliation issues and inconsistent calculations, were reviewed to ensure the new solution addressed real operational pain points.

Data modelling and design:
A structured financial data model was designed to support both high-level summaries and detailed P&L analysis from a single source of truth. The model was built to handle multiple financial hierarchies and time perspectives while ensuring calculation consistency across all views. Advanced DAX measures were developed to support core financial metrics, margin calculations, and time intelligence, including monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and year-to-date views. These measures ensured consistent aggregation, accurate variance analysis, and reusable logic across the executive scorecard and detailed financial statements. The resulting model provided a robust foundation for scalable reporting and future enhancements.

Dashboard development:

We designed and implemented a Power BI Financial Scorecard that transformed financial reporting into a fast, interactive, and visually intuitive experience:

  • Executive Scorecard:
A clean, presentation-ready dashboard highlighting core KPIs—Revenue, Net Income, Operating Income, COGS, OPEX, and margin ratios—ideal for board meetings and strategic reviews.

  • Detailed Scorecard:
A dynamic matrix view of the full financial statement, including Sales, COGS, Gross Margin, Operating Expenses, Income Before Tax, and Net Income. Users can instantly switch between Monthly, Quarterly, Half-Yearly, and YTD views using Power BI bookmarks that update both layout and calculations in real time.

  • Interactive Navigation:

Buttons and page-level navigation enable seamless movement between the executive summary and detailed financial views. This ensures both executives and finance teams work from the same data model while accessing the level of detail appropriate to their needs.

Business Impact

The Financial Scorecard replaced slow, manual reporting with a single, trusted view of financial performance. Executives gained immediate visibility into revenue, margins, and cost structure, allowing them to focus discussions on insights and decisions rather than reconciling numbers. Board and leadership reviews became more efficient, with consistent KPIs available at a glance and the ability to drill into detail when required.

The dashboard significantly reduced time spent on manual reporting and adhoc analysis. Flexible time views and interactive navigation enabled faster investigation of variances across periods, while consistent calculations improved confidence in financial results. Overall, the solution improved transparency, speed, and alignment between finance and leadership, supporting more informed and timely decision-making.
